My Story
I was born in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Iʻm a Fire Dragon. My parents partied hard and my Dad was a local folk rock star, with fans around the world. So perhaps for my own good, I was raised by my conservative genius grandparents in Tucson, Arizona military intelligence. I was rather spoiIed but expected to live an extremely disciplined and perfectionist life with little interaction with other children. They taught me books and body care were the most important thing. I lived a comfortable life up to the age of 10 while under the primary care of my maternal grandparents. They were civil servants and didn't know anything about business or finance. They taught me to appreciate music, dance, ballet, fine arts, literature, math, science, engineering, architecture, military craft and in particular astronomy, zoology and how to care for animals. My maternal Grandfather Airforce Lt Col John Joseph Kaiser-Meyer (Prussian from Schleswig-Holstein) worked for the space program and was hoping I would become an astronaut. He taught me to love and respect nature. I grew up at the zoo behind the scenes and with multiple exotic animals in our home. I had a boa from kindergarten age named Morticia that got to be quite massive. She would even sleep with me at times. No joke. My maternal grandmother, Katherine Patricia Meibos from Salt Lake City, half Dutch, descendant of every Scottish King, had three great grandparents on the Mayflower, and had a special hobby of training German Shepard dogs. Her maternal line is the first mormons to inhabit Utah, a pioneer pilgrim in every way. She is related to a lot of famous people. Lots and lots of them. A blueblood. She was valedictorian and expected the same work ethic from all her kids. I had to get 100% on all my school work. No exceptions. They were my best friends growing up. My grandparents and the animals.
I taught myself how to play piano before I started kindergarten or knew how to write well. Actually we had a mini electric organ with foot pedals. So I got a taste for electronic music early. Music runs in my family. I inherited a rich musical legacy from my father James Daniel Bla Pahinui. Like father like daughter. We are both a little bit out there and follow the beat of our own drummer. I became a techno dj of the night lmfao! He was really well know in the 70's for performing a song called Moonlight Lady, which all the ladies swooned over. His Dad is Gabby Pahinui - descended from the rulers of Maui, the most influential Hawaiian musician of the 20th century (for Hawaiian people) and leader of the 2nd Kanaka Maoli (ancient Hawaiians) cultural renaissance. The first was led by King David Kalākaua in the late 1800's. We were a tribe of war lords and magicians that became sound healers. My Grandfather was known as a folk musician, but my Dad actually preferred old fashioned doo-wop, rhythm and blues, rock-n-roll to traditional Hawaiian music. The last Grammy Award my family had as a unit is the soundtrack to the movie The Descendants. That movie is about us. My family.
The Hawaiian people are not a huge demographic and at his point, we are all related to either the Kingdom of Hawaii rulers or earlier dynasties. Our history is well preserved going back at least 1000 years, but prior to that, itʻs vague. DNA tests have shown that we are truly a mix of all of asia and the pacific. Especially Australian and Jomon. It is quite common for the same UK/American elite blue blood lines, to marry into significant Hawaiian families, regardless of financial status. My Hawaiian family was dirt poor. The main music labels and attorneys did not take great care of him. The same people that marry into our families, are the same people destroying our land, culture and killing us all off. I have watched my family and islands be destroyed for almost 5 decades.
My dad was a pure soul with the innocence of a child. A musical savant, and probably autistic/aspergers. Completely right brained. So authentic like a breath of fresh air. His hobby was rescuing feral cats. He cried easily. And told everyone he passed on the street that he loved them. Seriously who does that? We met at age 15 and regretfully, my mother and his 4th wife did everything they could to ruin our relationship. He died of chemotherapy, not cancer and my step mother didnʻt bother to tell me or invite me to his funeral. I found out on facebook. My heart will never be healed from the grief. I got to spend less than a year in total with him spread out over 3 decades, because she wouldnʻt let me live with him, his only child. I lost my Grandparents and my other closest relative under very tragic conditions as well. I was left homeless and completely alone during the pandemic after the passive aggressive destruction of my father. I have come to accept that many humans in this world are cruel by nature. You canʻt change them. You certainly canʻt beam love at them. All you can do is appreciate every second you have with people that love you and learn to let go.
My first love was classical music. I studied orchestral and marching percussion and have been a music educator for 30 years. My first records as a toddler were Dolly Parton, Mack the Knife and Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. I participated in the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps from Denver, Colorado for many years and toured with the Tony and Emmy award winning Broadway hit "Blast! The Show". This included multiple contracts at Disney in the United States. I had a little fan club of 5 year olds and their parents that would come see me weekly. I am cousins with Walt Disney and many old school hollywood celebrities.
In 2005, I started exploring the math of music, geometry and music technology. I enjoy studying every aspect of how music can affect our bodies, health, emotions, consciousness and the very fabric of matter itself. The power of sound. By studying cymatics, I have come to realize how music can destroy or heal.
I feel there is an urgent need for more music education in America. I hope to contribute to music and dance therapy research in traditional Western medicine and psychology. I am so thankful for all the amazing music teachers I have had in my life.
